Mexico’s Gilberto Mora is the youngest debutant at the FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup 2026 started, and history was made at the Mexico City Stadium. Gilberto Mora, a teenage talent, made history at the young age of 17 by being the youngest player to ever play for El Tri in a World Cup during Mexico’s opening-game victory against South Africa.
Mora was taken off the bench at the 65th minute. The home crowd, which included boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez, erupted in a thunderous cheer when he was introduced.
At 17 years and 240 days old, Mora was the sixth-youngest player to ever play in a World Cup. He was younger than Pele (17 years, 235 days), Salomon Olembe (17 years, 185 days), Femi Opabunmi (17 years, 101 days), Samuel Eto’o (17 years, 99 days), and Norman Whiteside (17 years, 41 days).
Mora was born in Tuxtla Gutierrez, southern Mexico, and raised in Tijuana. He made his senior debut just under two months before turning 16. Since that time, he has flown like the eagle on his nation’s flag.
He has made an impression at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025, where Mexico advanced to the quarterfinals, playing with a maturity that belied his age. He has also established himself as one of Mexico’s most promising young talents and broken Liga MX age records.
Coach Javier Aguirre placed his confidence in him at the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup, when the stakes were at their greatest, marking his breakthrough with El Tri. Mora made his first appearance in the quarterfinals against Saudi Arabia and became the youngest player to ever play for Mexico’s senior national squad.
In the semifinals versus Honduras, he then set up the game-winning goal for Raul Jimenez.
What makes the 17-year-old stand out is his capacity to interpret and foresee play, receive between the lines, dodge pressure, and release the ball with exquisite timing. He is more than just a talented kid: When the heat is on, he possesses the self-control, originality, and bravery to desire the ball.
He added a new dimension in attack and controlled unpredictability to an experienced Mexico side that might gain from freshness and imagination in the final third.
