IPL 2026: RR defeats MI by 30 runs to seal playoff berth

In a must-win game at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, Jofra Archer bowled well (3-17), as Rajasthan Royals defeated Mumbai Indians by 30 runs to secure a place in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 Playoffs.
Rajasthan Royals were in a precarious position at 119/5, but Archer’s spectacular cameo helped them rebound and score a respectable 205/8. As the Mumbai Indians were held to 175/9 in 20 overs and fell 30 runs short, the 31-year-old Caribbean-born England star took a wicket in each of his first two overs before returning to take Hardik Pandya’s crucial wicket.
With the ball adhering to the slower surface as the shadows grew, Rajasthan Royals, led by Archer, made a superb effort with the ball.
Suryakumar Yadav’s outstanding knock of 60 off 42 balls was in vain since, at one point, he, Hardik Pandya (34), and Will Jacks (33) had the Mumbai Indians in a position to win the game.
However, after they had recovered from a sorry-looking 48/3 in the sixth over, Archer dealt a fatal blow when Nandre Burger caught Pandya at long-on, and the MI chase went off course.
Burger, Brijesh Sharma, and Yash Raj Punja each took two wickets, while Archer took 3–17. RR won a victory that was really beneficial.
The Rajasthan Royals secured the fourth position in the playoffs with this victory, finishing with 16 points from 14 games (7 wins), and will now face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator in New Chandigarh on Wednesday.
Archer derailed Mumbai’s pursuit by taking Rohit Sharma, who had been brought in as an impact substitute to replace Raghu Sharma, for a four-ball duck when MI was still scoreless.
With a peach of a delivery that zigged in the air and swung out after pitching, he once more re-arranged Naman Dhir’s middle stump in the third over. In the sixth over, Mumbai was on the verge of falling at 38/4 after losing Ryan Rickelton (12) and Tilak Varma (3) in rapid succession on February 13.
To get Mumbai back on course, Suryakumar Yadav, the most productive MI batter this season, and Will Jacks collaborated for 63 runs on the fifth wicket in 38 deliveries.
In the 12th over, Yash Raj Punj was pounded for 22 runs, with Hardik Pandya hitting sixes off back-to-back legal balls after Jacks (33 off 18 balls) hit a six. Punja got his second wicket of the day when he claimed Corbin Bosch with a fullish leg-break after Pandya’s attack.
When Riyan Parag dropped a tough opportunity off Pandya on the first ball he faced, Pandya lived a charmed life as he hit consecutive boundaries off Dasun Shanaka, as he and Surya brought the Mumbai Indians’ chase back on track. The asking rate for MI had been lowered to 10 runs per over.
However, Archer came back for his fourth over and dismissed Hardik Pandya, who made a bad pull on a shorter ball thrown wide, giving Nandre Burger a simple catch. The sixth-wicket combination of Suryakumar Yadav and Pandya scored 48 runs.
However, when Suryakumar Yadav was caught and bowled by Burger while attempting to score a big shot in the 18th over, the five-time winners’ hopes were dashed.
Earlier, after being asked to bat first, RR lost their prolific openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (27, 12b, 1×4, 3×6) and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (4) cheaply. At the conclusion of the Power-play, the Royals were in dire straits at 54/3 when skipper Riyan Parag was out for 14 off 8 balls.
Before the Sri Lankan all-rounder ran himself out for 29 off 15 balls, after hitting three massive sixes, Dhruv Jurel and Shanaka drove RR to three figures. Shortly after, Bosch bowled Jurel with an outstanding yorker. With 38 runs off 26 deliveries (3×4, 2×6), he was RR’s highest run scorer.
Despite Shardul Thakur taking two wickets in an over, Archer, who was elevated to No. 7, performed admirably in leading the Royals’ rearguard action, hitting a 15-ball 32 that included one four and three massive sixes.
The RR bowling team’s excellent effort ultimately proved to be sufficient, due in part to Ravindra Jadeja’s two boundaries in his 11-ball 19 as an impact sub and Nandre Burger’s first T20 six during his three-ball 10 as the team crossed the 200-run barrier.
Brief scores:
Rajasthan Royals 205/8 in 20 overs (Dhruv Jurel 38, Jofra Archer 32; Shardul Thakur 2-41, Deepak Chahar 2-43)
Mumbai Indians 175/9 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 60, Hardik Pandya 34, Will Jack 33; Jofra Archer 3-17, Nandre Burger 2-43, Brijesh Sharma 2-26, Yash Raj Punja 2-44)
