IPL 2026: CSK thrash MI by eight wickets

In their IPL 2026 match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, the Chennai Super Kings defeated the Mumbai Indians by eight wickets thanks to a flawless all-around display.
After MI was held to 159/7 by Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmad, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and rookie Kartik Sharma scored unbroken half-centuries to secure a convincing chase in CSK’s favor.
Gaikwad scored his second consecutive fifty by hitting 67 not out off 48 balls, which included five fours and two sixes. CSK’s goal of 160 was not a large one. Meanwhile, Kartik scored his first IPL half-century with an unbroken 40-ball stay, smashing four boundaries and three sixes, as CSK ended the chase with 11 balls to spare.
At 20 years and six days old, Kartik became the second youngest CSK batter to score an IPL fifty, following Ayush Mhatre (17y 291d). With a 98-run partnership off 75 balls for the third wicket, the pair expertly rotated the strike, punished the errant deliveries by sending them to the boundary ropes, and maintained complete command of the chase.
Despite Jasprit Bumrah and AM Ghazanfar each claiming a wicket, CSK maintained their composure during the chase and were unable to finish the double over MI and get their season back on track. CSK has now defeated MI in the IPL by eight wickets for the third time, following league doubles in 2014 and 2023. This is CSK’s largest victory against MI in the IPL.
From the very start, CSK’s pursuit was consistent. Ryan Rickelton even missed a catch of Sanju Samson before catching him off Bumrah. Gaikwad quickly got acclimated, finding the holes and making sure the score kept moving. Before being taken out by Ghazanfar, Urvil Patel made a cameo appearance, smashing two fours and as many sixes for 24 runs off 12 balls, giving the innings some much-needed momentum.
After that, Kartik joined Gaikwad, and the two of them put together a match-winning partnership. Kartik demonstrated maturity beyond his years by striking a balance between caution and aggressiveness, while Gaikwad’s fluency was evident as he accurately targeted the offside field.
Due to their collaboration, MI’s bowlers were never able to exert pressure. The pursuit became a formality as CSK were well ahead of the necessary pace by the halfway point. Together, they made sure that CSK won the 18th over comfortably, while MI was now facing a potential early elimination from the tournament.
In a disciplined bowling display that helped CSK keep MI to a subpar score, Ahmad previously contributed 2-26, while Kamboj asserted 3-32. After a strong start for MI, who were 90/2 at the halfway point, CSK recovered on a two-paced pitch, but then struggled in the final ten overs, scoring 69/5.
The pacers for CSK were methodical in delivering yorkers and hard length balls. Naman Dhir led MI with 57 runs off 37 balls, but in the latter stages, he became trapped with Hardik Pandya, whose timing let him down. Even though Shivam Dube struggled in the field, CSK were on the ball from the start.
Will Jacks’s fall to Kamboj in the second over gave MI a jolt early. In the seventh over, Noor Ahmad dismissed Ryan Rickleton after he retaliated by smashing five to race to 37. Prior to being out for 21 by debutant Ramakrishna Ghosh, Dhir and Suryakumar Yadav collaborated to maintain the scoreboard ticking.
Prior to CSK’s recovery, MI appeared to be headed for a huge score at 90/2 after 10 overs. Jamie Overton’s sharp off-cutter brought Dhir’s outstanding innings to an untimely conclusion, and he mishit it to extra cover, while Tilak Varma’s rough stay ended on five against Noor. To complete a three-wicket haul, Kamboj arrived to get rid of Pandya and Robin Minz.
MI’s innings came to a conclusion after Trent Boult hit a late six, and Kamboj and Noor made sure of it. Considering the start they had in the first ten overs, MI was able to accumulate a score that seemed uninspiring, which CSK easily exceeded, much to the joy of their devoted supporters.
Brief scores:
Mumbai Indians 159/7 in 20 overs (Naman Dhir 57, Ryan Rickelton 37; Anshul Kamboj 3-32, Noor Ahmad 2-26)
