India becomes a worldwide digital power in 12 years, from AI to data centers

India has established itself as a global digital superpower during the previous 12 years thanks to quick advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, quantum technology, data centers, and digital public infrastructure.
The fact-sheet highlighted that with solid policy backing, a growing digital infrastructure, and a booming innovation ecosystem, India has gone from being mostly a user of digital technology to a creator of globally scalable tech solutions.
The Digital India program has been one of the most important forces behind this change. During the time, the nation’s internet connections rose from 25. 15 crore in 2014 to over 102 crore in 2026, while broadband connections increased from 6. 1 crore to almost 100 crore.
Moreover, 5G services are now accessible in nearly every district nationwide, and the optical fiber coverage has increased by more than twice to over 42 lakh route kilometers.
The government emphasized India’s increasing capabilities in sophisticated technologies.
Indigenous PARAM Rudra systems are among the 38 supercomputers that have been installed at prominent institutes as part of the National Supercomputing Mission, with a total computing capability of 47 petaflops.
A semiconductor fabrication facility, compound semiconductor units, and chip packaging facilities are among the 12 projects totaling around Rs 1. 64 lakh crore that have been approved under the Rs 76,000-crore Semicon India Programme in the semiconductor industry.
Likewise, the IndiaAI Mission, which was approved with a budget of over Rs 10,300 crore, is constructing a shared computing facility with over 38,000 GPUs.
Currently, the AI Kosh platform contains more than 300 AI models and over 12,000 datasets across 20 industries.
Quantum technology advancements have also been made by India.
The National Quantum Mission has set up four thematic centers and helped a number of firms with a budget of Rs 6,003. 65 crore.
A safe quantum communication network spanning 1,000 km was recently showcased by the country.
With major centers in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Noida, and Jamnagar, India’s data centre capacity has quadrupled from approximately 375 MW in 2020 to almost 1,500 MW by 2025, according to the government.
Additionally, it emphasized India’s increasing impact on Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) via platforms like Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker, CoWIN, UMANG, and GeM.
Furthermore, India has inked agreements with 23 nations for cooperation on DPI, and UPI services are currently available in a number of countries, including Singapore, the UAE, France, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
The government further said that the nation’s position in the Global Innovation Index increased from 81st in 2015 to 38th in 2025.
It stated that India is becoming a trusted worldwide center for innovation and next-generation technologies thanks to ongoing investments in digital infrastructure, new technologies, research, and talented people.
