    Pragyan Ojha named chief selector; Powar joins senior men’s panel

    Former India left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha has taken over as chief selector, while off-spinner Ramesh Powar has joined the senior men’s selection committee.

    The BCCI announced on Monday that Ojha would chair the selection panel based on seniority, as he has played the most Tests among its five members, with 24 appearances. The committee now comprises Ojha, Powar, Shiv Sundar Das, RP Singh and Ajay Ratra.

    The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape, unanimously recommended Powar for the role after screening and interviewing candidates at the BCCI headquarters last week. Powar also interviewed for a position on the junior selection committee.

    Powar, 48, represented India in two Tests and 31 ODIs between 2004 and 2007. He brings considerable experience to the selection panel and beat competition from former India and West Zone players Wasim Jaffer, Salil Ankola, Jacob Martin and Connor Williams.

    The Mumbai-based former cricketer served two stints as head coach of the India women’s team. During his tenure, he guided the side to an Asia Cup title and a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. His second stint ended when the BCCI moved him to the National Cricket Academy, now known as the BCCI Centre of Excellence, in Bengaluru, where he worked as a spin-bowling coach.

    Powar has also coached Mumbai to a Vijay Hazare Trophy title and led Gujarat’s senior men’s team as head coach for the past two seasons before stepping down recently. He also worked as a consultant coach for Australia’s Under-19 team during its recent ODI series against India.

    The senior selection committee vacancy emerged after Ajit Agarkar stepped down as chief selector. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia acknowledged Agarkar’s contribution and commitment during his tenure as chairman of the men’s selection committee.

    “Since his appointment in July 2023, Agarkar led the committee through a significant period for Indian cricket, with India winning three ICC trophies, two Asia Cup titles and back-to-back Asian Games gold medals,” Saikia said in a statement.

    Agarkar took charge in July 2023 and oversaw a successful period for Indian men’s cricket, during which the team won three ICC trophies, two Asia Cup titles and consecutive gold medals at the Asian Games.

    Govt Urges Meta to Review Facebook and Instagram Algorithms

    The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has asked technology giant Meta to review the content recommendation and ranking systems that power Facebook and Instagram. The move increases regulatory scrutiny of how social media algorithms amplify information in India, according to multiple reports.

    In an advisory to Meta, the ministry asked the company to ensure that its recommendation systems do not expose users disproportionately to a single narrative or a limited range of viewpoints. Instead, MeitY urged Meta to give users greater access to diverse, relevant and credible information, according to the reports.

    The ministry also directed Meta to strengthen its systems for quickly identifying, reviewing and escalating content that gains significant reach through recommendations. It wants the company to pay particular attention to material that could create public confusion, trigger violence or disrupt public order.

    MeitY also asked the US-based company to implement the measures immediately and inform the government about the steps it takes.

    The advisory specifically highlights photographs, videos and graphics related to ongoing public events when users cannot easily verify their authenticity, timing, location or surrounding circumstances.

    It calls on Meta to provide additional context when users present old or unrelated visuals as current events, selectively edit footage or circulate unverified claims about emergencies, police action or other official measures.

    This latest advisory marks another step in the government’s scrutiny of Meta’s content moderation and recommendation systems.

    In August, government officials questioned Meta executives about content recommendation algorithms, deepfakes, synthetic media and safeguards against unlawful content.

    Meta has also strengthened its content moderation and advertising safeguards following concerns about child sexual exploitation material.

    Earlier this month, the company said it had deployed new AI-driven advertising review systems and removed 5.3 million pieces of child sexual exploitation content in India between January and June 2026. Meta also reported that its systems detected more than 98% of this content proactively.

    FSSAI Tightens Storage and Transport Rules for Khoa, Paneer, Meat & Fish

    The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued an advisory on Sunday directing food business operators (FBOs) to handle, store and transport perishable food items such as khoa, paneer, meat and fish under controlled temperature conditions throughout the supply chain. The regulator aims to protect food safety and public health through these measures.

    FSSAI said it had observed that some food businesses fail to maintain appropriate temperatures when handling, storing and transporting these perishable products.

    These foods can develop harmful microbes and spoil quickly when businesses fail to maintain the prescribed temperatures.

    “FSSAI issues an advisory on handling, storage, and transportation of perishable foods like khoa, paneer, meat, and fish under controlled temperature conditions throughout the supply chain,” the regulator said.

    “FBOs must ensure strict adherence to hygiene and temperature standards,” it added.

    The Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, require food business operators to maintain prescribed temperatures at every stage of the supply chain, from procurement and sourcing to delivery to the end consumer. These requirements cover chilling, transportation, storage and distribution.

    FSSAI warned that unsuitable temperatures can compromise food safety and threaten public health. The regulator also stated that such practices violate the hygiene and sanitary requirements under the regulations.

    FSSAI directed all food business operators involved in manufacturing, packing, storing, transporting, distributing and selling these products to use clean, covered and hygienic vehicles suitable for food transportation. The regulator also instructed businesses to maintain prescribed temperatures throughout storage and transit.

    FSSAI further instructed food operators to use food-grade packaging materials and suitable secondary packaging. It advised businesses to avoid gunny bags and other non-food-grade coverings that could compromise product safety.

    Food businesses must also protect their products from dust, moisture, pests, physical damage and cross-contamination during storage, loading, unloading and transportation.

    Additionally, operators must maintain proper consignment records and traceability details. They must also produce invoices and other relevant documents whenever the competent authority requests them.

    India and South Korea continue to explore opportunities for cooperation in environmental protection and the energy transition, including nuclear energy, green hydrogen and renewable energy, the Indian Embassy in Seoul said on Thursday.

    Traders operating in and around Connaught Place on Thursday expressed concern over the impact of frequent protests and demonstrations in central Delhi, saying such events severely disrupt business activity and make it difficult for them to cover operating expenses, including staff salaries.

    Business owners said the effects of protests extend well beyond the day of the demonstration. Ayush Chopra, owner of Bhape Da Hotel and Meenar Restaurant in Connaught Place, said commercial activity begins to slow several days before a major protest as people avoid travelling to the area out of concern over traffic restrictions and disruptions.

    He said customer footfall drops significantly as people prefer to stay indoors. Even after a protest ends, business remains sluggish for several days because videos circulating on social media continue to fuel public apprehension.

    Chopra noted that while revenues fall sharply during such periods, businesses must continue to pay fixed expenses, including rent, electricity bills and employee salaries, creating financial strain. He added that the disruption affects not only large establishments but also small vendors and local businesses, which suffer from reduced customer traffic.

    Calling for a long-term solution, Chopra suggested that authorities shift large-scale demonstrations away from central Delhi and designate a dedicated venue for protests to prevent disruptions to commercial activity.

    Varjesh Agrawal, owner of Bengali Sweet House and Pastry Shop, echoed these concerns, saying business during the recent protest period fell to less than half its normal level. He said customer movement remained weak for several days, while traffic restrictions further hurt trade in the area.

    The concerns follow a major protest in Delhi on October 10, which triggered heavy congestion across parts of central Delhi. Authorities imposed traffic restrictions and closed several key routes to maintain law and order, disrupting daily business operations at both small and large establishments in the area.

    Local traders said they respect the right to protest, but repeated disruptions in one of the capital’s busiest commercial hubs directly affect sales, customer footfall and overall business confidence.

    RBI Clarifies Rules for Foreign Exchange Risk Reserve Calculation

    The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Thursday issued a set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) to clarify the scope and calculation of its 20 per cent Foreign Exchange Risk Reserve (FERR), including exemptions for certain hedges and the treatment of options and rolled-over contracts.

    The RBI said the FERR would apply to user contracts exceeding $2 million equivalent in which users purchase foreign currency against the rupee to hedge current-account transactions. The requirement excludes contracts in which users sell foreign currency against the rupee, as well as contracts that hedge capital-account transactions.

    “The FERR requirement applies to specified derivative contracts undertaken by authorised dealers with users having a notional value exceeding USD 2 million equivalent. Accordingly, a derivative contract having a notional value of USD 2 million equivalent or less undertaken by an authorised dealer with a user is not subject to the requirement. However, the authorised dealers shall guard against any attempt towards structuring of derivative transactions for avoidance of these provisions,” the FAQs state.

    The RBI also clarified that the FERR would not apply to derivative contracts that users enter into to hedge current-account outflows arising from capital-account transactions.

    These include interest payments on External Commercial Borrowings (ECBs), coupon payments on resident debt instruments held by non-residents, and dividends payable to non-resident investors. Under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) rules, these payments qualify as current-account transactions.

    The FERR requirement covers only foreign exchange derivative contracts involving the Indian rupee. It does not cover derivative contracts that do not involve the rupee, the RBI said.

    However, banks must continue to maintain the reserve against their own qualifying hedges of currency risks arising from these exposures.

    The RBI clarified that authorised dealers must maintain FERR equal to 20 per cent of the rupee equivalent of the notional amount of each applicable derivative contract. For example, a derivative contract worth $10 million against the rupee at a contracted rate of Rs 95 per US dollar has a notional value of Rs 95 crore. The applicable FERR would amount to Rs 19 crore.

    Authorised dealers must deposit and maintain the FERR in their current accounts with the Reserve Bank. They must maintain the reserve daily, starting on the working day immediately after entering into each applicable derivative contract. The RBI requires authorised dealers to maintain the reserve on a gross basis for every qualifying transaction.

    Authorised dealers must also maintain detailed records of qualifying transactions and their associated FERR amounts and submit those records for audit, the RBI said.

    The RBI further clarified that authorised dealers would not earn interest on the FERR they maintain with the central bank. They must retain the reserve for each applicable derivative contract until the day after the contract terminates.

    India Sees Rise in Employment in September: NSO Data

    India’s overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) and Worker Population Ratio (WPR) rose in September 2026 compared with the same month last year, indicating a year-on-year improvement in employment, according to figures the National Statistics Office (NSO) released on Thursday.

    The overall LFPR increased by 0.2 percentage points, from 55.3 per cent in September 2025 to 55.5 per cent in September 2026. During the same period, rural LFPR rose by 0.6 percentage points, from 57.4 per cent to 58.0 per cent, while urban LFPR declined marginally by 0.2 percentage points, from 50.9 per cent to 50.7 per cent.

    However, urban LFPR improved by 0.3 percentage points month-on-month, reaching 50.7 per cent in September 2026 compared with August.

    The overall female LFPR stood at 34.6 per cent in September 2026, down from 34.8 per cent in August. Urban female LFPR, however, increased by 0.5 percentage points month-on-month, from 25.4 per cent to 25.9 per cent, reaching its highest level since October 2025.

    On a year-on-year basis, overall female LFPR rose by 0.5 percentage points, from 34.1 per cent in September 2025 to 34.6 per cent in September 2026. Rural female LFPR increased by 1.0 percentage point, from 37.9 per cent to 38.9 per cent, while urban female LFPR remained broadly stable at around 26 per cent.

    The overall Worker Population Ratio (WPR) remained broadly stable at 52.7 per cent in September 2026. Urban WPR reached its highest level since October 2025, at 47.2 per cent. Both men and women contributed to this improvement, with urban male WPR rising from 70.7 per cent to 71.0 per cent and urban female WPR increasing from 23.2 per cent to 23.5 per cent.

    On a year-on-year basis, overall WPR increased by 0.3 percentage points, from 52.4 per cent in September 2025 to 52.7 per cent in September 2026.

    The overall unemployment rate (UR) fell by 0.2 percentage points year-on-year to 5.0 per cent in September 2026. During the same period, the rural unemployment rate declined by 0.4 percentage points, from 4.6 per cent to 4.2 per cent. In urban areas, the unemployment rate remained broadly stable at 6.8 per cent in September.
