The BCCI headquarters in Mumbai finally shed light on the last several days’ buzz on the future of India men’s T20I captaincy on Saturday. As India’s new T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer has taken over from Suryakumar Yadav in a significant leadership change, with his initial task being the tours of Ireland and England.
Following a five-match series in England from July 1 to July 11, India will play two Twenty20 Internationals in Dublin on June 26 and 28. The T20I team’s vice captain, Shreyas, is in charge, signalling a fresh start for India in the shortest format, especially with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand coming up.
With Suryakumar Yadav’s extended lean patch forcing the selectors and team management to look to the future and confirm Shreyas as the new leader of the side in the shortest format, the Men’s T20I captaincy issue was clearly at the forefront before Saturday’s selection meeting and announcement.
It was reportedly considered to maintain Suryakumar as captain up until the England trip, with Hardik Pandya also reportedly vying for the leadership position. However, because of his advanced age and Suryakumar’s continued dismal performance, Shreyas, who showed excellent leadership abilities and earned the complete respect of everyone in the changing room in both IPL and domestic cricket, was selected as India’s next leader in T20Is by progressive decision-makers.
Suryakumar, who guided India to a record defense of the Men’s T20 World Cup championship on home turf in March, scored only 270 runs in 13 innings for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026, averaging 20. 76. In the T20 World Cup, his statistics were also unimpressive, scoring only 242 runs at a strike rate of 136. 72. In contrast, Iyer’s promotion to T20I captaincy marks a notable reversal.
After December 2023, he was no longer part of India’s T20I plans, but he has since made his comeback thanks to his outstanding IPL leadership and consistent performance. Aside from guiding Mumbai to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2024/25, he also led Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to IPL finals in 2020 and 2025, and Kolkata Knight Riders to the 2024 IPL title.
Iyer, a substitute for the wounded Tilak Varma, was chosen for the home T20I series versus New Zealand before the T20 World Cup, but he was unable to participate. Iyer, at 31, not only rejoins the T20I fold as a batter, but also as India’s 15th skipper in the shortest format, tasked with guiding the side through the next stage of its outstanding voyage.
Additionally, it is the second straight occasion that an Indian captain has been replaced shortly after winning an ICC title. India won the Champions Trophy in March under Rohit Sharma’s leadership in 2025; however, Shubman Gill took his place as the ODI captain before India’s tour to Australia in October.
For the time being, June 6 will be remembered as the day India expressed its desire to move into the future by naming Shreyas as the T20I captain.
